in surge blends environmental, vocal, instrumental, and synthetic sounds. Its construction was an exercise in the creation of archetypes of spatial motion (using up to 3rd order ambisonics) and gestural evolution that are continually recycled and layered in counterpoint. The title alludes to the prevalent surging (i.e. swells or wavelike motion) quality of sounds in their dynamic and spatial trajectories. It also alludes to aspects of my experience recording beehives at the Atlantic Center for the Arts, which ultimately served as a metaphor for the musical dramaturgy.
